Chapter 14

Uncle Albert flipped the closed sign on the bakery door as I cleared out the last of the dessert trays and wiped crumbs into the trash.

He staggered to a table and slumped into a seat. “I’m done in.”

I set down my cleaning cloth and joined him. “You shouldn’t have worked this afternoon. I didn’t think you were up to it.”

“I thought you could do with a break. You were out early this morning. And there were those custom cupcakes to deal with.”

“You heard me leave? I didn’t mean to disturb you, but I had something to do before work.”

“What was that?” Uncle Albert’s expression was full of kindness.

I shifted in my seat. “Jinti’s murder is on my mind. I went to see Atherton to find out more about what happened to her and if he had any idea about suspects.”

“There’ll be other suspects. I’m certain Devlin can’t seriously think you were involved. You’re a wonderful girl, well, young woman, and you’d never hurt anyone. What did Atherton have to say?”

“He wasn’t concerned that Jinti was found dead in his store. And he couldn’t tell me much, other than that she was a burden to him. I got the impression he was glad she was dead.”

“The Magic Council will come to their senses about you,” Uncle Albert said. “We run a professional operation here. I’m still amazed Devlin had the nerve to poke around.”

“I’d like to know what happened to Jinti. It seems unfair. She had so many troubles, what with losing Bella and then being fired by Atherton. It’s a horrible thing to happen to her, especially when she was already unwell.”

“I didn’t know Jinti was sick. What was wrong with her?”

“I’m not sure. Atherton seemed to think she was on her last legs. Jinti even asked him for some herbal remedy books to find a cure.”

“She knew everything there was to know about magical herbal cures. Jinti had been around for such a long time, helping others who were sick. Her loss will be felt by many.”

“She must have been desperate to go to Atherton.”

“That poor woman.” Uncle Albert’s smile was sympathetic. “I don’t want you worrying about this. We need to focus on cake. We’ve got several large custom orders. That woman you spoke to the other day placed an extra order on top of the birthday cake. She needs three-hundred cupcakes, so you’ll have your hands full here. You don’t want to get tangled up in Jinti’s murder and get distracted.”

“I’m already tangled up, thanks to Devlin.”

“Devlin Goody is young and trying to make a name for himself. I’ve met many magic users like him. He’s just being extra thorough. I expect by tomorrow, the killer will be caught.”

“I hope so. I won’t let this get in the way of my work.” The thought of tackling three-hundred cupcakes sent a shudder down my spine.

Uncle Albert studied me for a few seconds. “Is everything okay? I thought you’d be excited about the cupcakes, but you seem unhappy.”

“That’s hardly a surprise.
